The Ol Southern White and
Many Years ago before
most people knew what a American Bulldog was Folks down in the South Eastern
part of the
The one thing all would agree on is they were bred for Work ….
In those days Work didn’t mean Dog Sport, Agility or Weight Pull.
Folks Had to have a more Practical use for a large breed dog… A lot of people In the Southern States needed a dog to assist them in there daily lives. They would raise there Hogs in either large enclosures or what we call today Free Range. Most would brand or Ear (cut) notch there free range hogs so they knew if it was one of theirs or one of there Neighbors .. A Bulldog was used in catching one of these Hogs (working with Hounds or Curs) when they needed pork for there table.
The Hogs became wild after a few generations and bred to Russian Hogs that were brought there and let go for hunting years earlier.. Feral Hog Hunting was another use for these Bulldogs back then and still is today..
Another use back then for a Bulldogs was, as a Stock Dog . They were used for Catching Cattle and Unruly Bulls .. There were a lot of people back then that raised Cattle and needed help keeping an Unruly Bull under Control. There are many Stories of Bulls going after there owners and Bulldogs Catching them saving there owners from harm.. Some Bulldogs even Herded Cattle and other live stock and would catch on command..
You will always hear Stories of them being on most Folks Porches in the South just Watching the Kids and Keeping feral dogs and other Predators away, as well as Barking at people’s cars when they entered there farms and keeping a Watchful eye on Strangers…
In those Days those Uses Dictated how the Bulldogs would look and Act..
In some places today, It is the same way .. The Terrain in some Places called for a Shorter and Wider Dog For Catching Hogs in the Wild .. They Needed a Dog that could get under the Heavy Brush and still Catch the Hogs.
So the Ol Southern White’s or also known as the White English Bulldogs were Developed.. They tend to be Shorter Stockier Dogs ..

In Places where Catching Cattle was the Main function and the Terrain
wasn’t at thick or dense for Hog hunting a Leggier dog
was Preferred…Those Dogs were “Developed in

And are Still used today for Catching Live Stock and Hogs.. Both Style of Working Bulldogs were traded and bred together when the gene pool of Either Style of Dog became too tight. Both were used as an out cross to each other back then.. And still are used Today..
In 1970 Mr. John D Johnson and Mr. Alan Scott began breeding and Registering these dogs. So they could show them… At that time they were calling them,
“American (Pit) Bulldogs” .
The word PIT was later dropped from there name so they would No longer be confused with the Pit Bull Terrier.. Since then this Breed has been Changed to suit the New and Modern day Breeders from “All Over the Country” that found other uses for them,
Changing Them Forever…
Today the American Bulldog is mainly used as a Protection Dog and is now bred for Dominance and what trainers call "CIVIL DRIVE" (Man Aggression) . These are two things that make them harder to live with.. Dominance starts with litter Dominance, later becomes Dog Dominance and then becomes Social Dominance which makes them TEST YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN FOR A HIGHER PACK ORDER... That can be a Big problem ! Only Experienced dog owners can own dogs like this! This is Not what the Old Timers had in Mind !
THIS IS NOT HOW THE ORIGINAL BULLDOGS WERE BRED IN THE SOUTH YEARS AGO! They would NOT put up with dogs like that!
The Original Farm Utility American Bulldog was bred for Prey Drive and Fight Drive! Both of these drives make them easy to live with and make them a REAL BULLDOG! Not a WHITE ROTTWEILER !!
All hunting breeds are bred for Prey Drive and we all know hunting dogs make Great/Safe pets.
Unfortunately most of the breeders down South ,Today are breeding what I call,
"OL SOUTHERN HYBRIDS" ..
They have, for one reason or another, decided to add lines from Modern day Performance breeders and or Johnson /Bully Type dogs to there lines.. They are still calling there dogs Southern Dogs ,but if you read 4 generations into there pedigrees you will see Modern day, Johnson Dogs or Performance (Painter type) in there dogs now.. Its a Shame because the Original Style of Bulldog is now getting changed and are harder to find in its Original form !
Our Goal at WHITE KNIGHT AB's is to Preserve the Ol Southern White / Alabama American Bulldog in its ORIGINAL FORM while keeping its Original Working traits as a Farm Utility Dog ....
